What Is the D450?

Understanding the product, its role in your production line, and what makes it different.

The D450 Single Channel Rotary Cutter is a tissue converting machine that performs the cutting stage in tissue product manufacturing. It receives V-folded or N-folded tissue stacks from an upstream folding machine, trims the leading and trailing edges to remove loose fiber waste, then cuts the continuous tissue web into individual product stacks at a precise length — ready for downstream packaging (box packing, soft-pack wrapping, or bagging).

In a typical tissue production line, the process flows: Jumbo roll → Folding machine → Cutter (D450) → Packaging machine. The D450 sits at the critical transition point where product dimensions and edge quality are finalized. Any inaccuracy at this stage directly affects downstream packaging efficiency and final product appearance on the retail shelf.

The D450 uses a 360° continuous rotary cutting method — a circular blade mounted on a rotating disc makes non-stop cuts as tissue feeds through on a servo-driven synchronous belt. This is fundamentally different from reciprocating (up-down) cutters, which must decelerate and re-accelerate the blade on each stroke, limiting speed and consistency. Rotary cutting delivers higher speed, smoother cuts, and consistent blade velocity throughout the cycle.

As a single channel machine, the D450 processes one lane of tissue product at a time. This makes it ideal for small-to-medium tissue factories, or as the cutting unit in a single-lane tissue production line producing boxed facial tissue, soft-pack tissue, cotton tissue, moist wipes, or handkerchief tissue for household, commercial (HORECA), and away-from-home markets.

Key Features & Technical Advantages

Each feature is designed to solve a specific production challenge faced by tissue manufacturers.

450 Cuts/Min — High Throughput
Reaches 450 cuts/min for cut lengths up to 130mm, with speed auto-adapting for longer cuts. This throughput matches or exceeds the output rate of most folding machines, preventing the cutter from becoming the bottleneck in your production line. For tissue factories running single-lane production, this means no accumulation, no waiting, continuous flow from fold to pack.
±1mm Cut Precision — Consistent Quality
Dual-servo drive with synchronous belt positioning keeps cutting error within ±1mm (mid-section) and ±2mm (head/tail). This precision directly determines whether your boxed tissue fits the carton correctly, whether soft-pack sealing overlaps properly, and whether retail shelf presentation meets brand standards. Inconsistent cut length is the #1 cause of packaging rejects in tissue plants — the D450 eliminates it.
100% Trim Waste Removal — Clean Product
Trims 15–30mm of leading and trailing edge waste and completely evacuates it from the product stream. Loose fiber at cut edges is the primary source of consumer complaints about "tissue crumbs" and packaging machine jam-ups. By removing trim waste at source, the D450 delivers a clean product stack that packs smoothly and opens cleanly for the end user.
One-Key Smart Operation — Low Labor Cost
One-key roller height adjustment and one-key parameter reset reduce operator skill requirements and changeover time. In markets where trained machine operators are scarce and expensive, this feature lets a single operator manage the cutter with minimal training — typically one shift from zero to production-ready.
Bidirectional In-Line — Flexible Line Design
Connects to upstream folding machine or downstream packaging machine from either side — front and rear bidirectional coupling. This gives factory layout engineers the freedom to arrange the production line left-to-right or right-to-left depending on available floor space, existing utilities, and material flow direction in the plant.
Two-Stage Energy Saving — Lower Operating Cost
Progressive two-stage power management reduces energy draw during idle and low-demand periods without slowing peak production. For factories running 2–3 shifts daily, energy cost per 1000 cuts drops significantly compared to single-stage machines that run at full power continuously. This directly improves profit per ton of finished tissue.
Fixed-Position Knife Stop — Safer Maintenance
The circular knife halts at the same angular position after every cycle stop. This means the blade edge is always in a predictable location for safe blade changes, consistent auto-grind positioning, and faster startup after stops. Reduces maintenance risk and operator injury potential — critical for factories with rotating shift crews.
Anti-Arch Protection — Zero Jam-Ups
Built-in detection prevents tissue stacks from arching (deforming into a curved shape) as they feed into the cutting zone. Arching is the most common cause of cutter jam-ups in tissue plants, leading to blade damage, product waste, and 15–30 minutes of unplanned downtime per incident. The D450 detects and prevents arching before it causes a stop.

Applications & Production Scenarios

Where the D450 fits in real-world tissue manufacturing — the products it makes and the production lines it serves.

The D450 is designed for tissue converting factories that manufacture finished tissue products from jumbo rolls. It handles the cutting stage for the following product categories:

  • Boxed facial tissue — V-fold interlocked tissue stacks cut to length, then box-packed for household and office use. This is the highest-volume tissue product globally.
  • Soft-pack tissue — V-fold tissue in film-wrap packaging for value and commercial segments. The D450's precise cut length ensures consistent pack dimensions for flow-wrap machines.
  • Cotton tissue — Non-woven cotton or bamboo-fiber tissue for premium personal care. These materials require clean cuts without fiber pull — the D450's sharp rotary blade and trim system deliver this.
  • Moist facial tissue (wet wipes) — Pre-moistened tissue stacks for cosmetic and hygiene use. Wet-strength tissue cuts differently from dry tissue — the D450's servo feed control adapts feed speed to material characteristics.
  • Handkerchief tissue — Multi-fold pocket tissue for away-from-home and HORECA segments. Typically requires smaller cut lengths where the D450's 450 cuts/min speed is most advantageous.

Typical production line configurations:

  • Standalone cutting — D450 operates independently, fed by hand or from a buffer table. Suitable for factories without a folding machine, or for contract cutting of pre-folded tissue.
  • In-line with folding machine — Folding machine feeds folded tissue directly into the D450, which cuts and sends stacks to the packaging machine. This is the most common configuration for box tissue and soft-pack production.
  • In-line with packaging machine — D450 feeds cut stacks directly into a box packing machine, soft-pack wrapper, or bagging machine. Bidirectional coupling allows flexible line direction.

Market segments served: Household tissue brands, private-label tissue manufacturers, HORECA (hotel/restaurant/cafe) tissue suppliers, away-from-home tissue distributors, and contract tissue converters in Southeast Asia, Middle East, Africa, Latin America, and Central Asia.

Problems the D450 Solves

Pain points that tissue manufacturers face — and how the D450 addresses each one.

Slow Manual or Semi-Auto Cutting
Problem: Hand-cutting or slow reciprocating cutters limit production to 100–200 cuts/min, creating a bottleneck. Solution: The D450's 360° rotary cutting delivers 450 cuts/min — 2–4× faster than manual or guillotine methods, keeping pace with modern folding machines.
Inconsistent Cut Length & Packaging Rejects
Problem: Variable cut length causes tissues to not fit cartons, seals to misalign, and appearance defects on shelf. Solution: ±1mm servo-driven precision ensures every cut is identical — packaging machines run smoothly, reject rates drop, and brand quality is consistent.
Loose Fiber & Edge Waste Contamination
Problem: Un-trimmed edges shed fiber crumbs inside packaging, trigger consumer complaints, and jam packaging machines. Solution: 100% trim removal with 15–30mm edge trimming and complete waste evacuation delivers a clean product stack every time.
High Operator Skill Requirement
Problem: Complex cutter setup requires experienced operators who are expensive and hard to find, especially in developing markets. Solution: One-key adjustment and parameter reset means a new operator can run the D450 after a single shift of training — reducing labor cost and dependency on skilled technicians.
Frequent Jam-Ups and Unplanned Downtime
Problem: Tissue arching at the feed point causes blade jams, each costing 15–30 minutes of downtime plus potential blade damage. Solution: Anti-arching detection prevents the condition before it causes a stop — reducing unplanned downtime to near zero for this failure mode.
High Energy Cost Per Unit Produced
Problem: Single-stage machines draw full power even during idle periods, driving up electricity cost per ton of output. Solution: Two-stage energy management scales power consumption to actual demand — lower cost per cut, better profit margin, and a smaller carbon footprint for your factory.
